West40 has taken a huge step toward serving youth in need from across the state in a planned partnership with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
The Westchester Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved West40’s petition request to remodel and renovate the old St. Joseph High School building and property into a residential school. The vote for the special use permit passed 6-0 on Monday, June 3 during a public hearing, in which West40 presented its plans for the property, located at 10900 W. Cermak Road.
The commission’s approval of West40’s request was necessary for it to be officially voted on by the Westchester Village Board. The vote is expected to be held during the village’s board meeting on June 25.
The residential school would serve approximately 40 boys between the ages of 11-18 in the foster care system. Renovation of the south building near Cermak is ongoing and the demolition of the north building could happen within weeks now that asbestos abatement has been completed.
