There could be any number of reasons why a student routinely does not attend school. Truancy impacts students in different ways. But with some guidance and a tailored plan, West40 truancy liaisons are helping many students return to the classroom and get on the path to graduation.
Truancy liaisons take pride in the support they provide students across the West40 area. In fact, we celebrate every win, large or small, in our efforts to keep kids connected to learning.
West40 shares in this success along with parents, school administrators, and the students themselves. The following quotes highlight the challenges students have overcome.
Elementary School Principal
“I want to thank you guys for all you do! The attendance incentives and follow up with families have made a remarkable difference."
Mom of a Chronically Truant High School Student
“It's [an] excellent program, they even visit the students to make sure they show up at the school."
Elementary School PBIS Lead
"On behalf of our school’s PBIS team, I would like to thank West40 for collaborating with us, and finding ways to motivate our students, knowing that tomorrow's leaders sit in our classrooms today.”
Mom of Truant High School Student
“I don’t know where we would be without West40."
West40 Truancy Liaison
"(An elementary student) was struggling to enter the building every morning - refusing to enter the building, having tantrums, and requiring school staff to intervene. Once inside, it would take staff at least 15 minutes to get the student to regulate and begin the day. After speaking with the student's mother, I identified the main barrier was the student did not have a set bedtime and was not getting enough sleep. The parent and I discussed the importance of sleep and regular and consistent bedtimes. After the parent implemented a new bedtime and morning ritual, the student actually enjoys going to school. The student is going to school more regularly and is now on time. In addition, the school has not reported any incidents with this student."
