Loyola Medicine Mobile Pediatric Unit Celebrates 25th Anniversary

A familiar sight at many immunization and health screening events across the Chicago area is celebrating its 25th anniversary of serving children in underserved communities.

Loyola Medicine’s Pediatric Mobile Health Unit has provided crucial health services to more than 157,000 children since its inception in 1998. A celebration was held Wednesday in Melrose Park to showcase Loyola’s dedication to making pediatric health care accessible.

The Mobile Health Unit is funded by donors and offers a wide range of medical services to communities in need. It is a “fully equipped pediatric doctor’s office on wheels”, according to Loyola Medicine.

“I really am happy to make a small difference, one child at a time. Every day is a new adventure for us,” said program director Susan Finn, MSN, APRN, CPNP.

The Pediatric Mobile Health Unit team partners with schools and community organizations and is active four to five days a week as it provides physicals, lab testing, preventative dental care and other health services.

Finn said the Pediatric Mobile Health Unit’s work with West40 over the last couple of years has allowed it to reach more families in need.

Additionally, Finn said the Pediatric Mobile Health Unit team is looking to expand their dental services to include cleanings and sealants.
