A recent East Leyden High School graduate with a passion for sports and journalism has accomplished a major feat for a reporter: having a story air on national television.
Between his junior and senior year at East Leyden last summer, Giovanny Soriano participated in the PBS Student Reporting Labs at Arizona State University, where he helped produce a segment that aired on the PBS NewsHour.
Soriano was among twenty-seven other students from across the country to take part in the week-long video journalism camp.
"The more valuable pieces I learned were proper lighting and how to interview someone. I was taught to treat it more like a conversation and not an interrogation," said Soriano. "It's all about making them feel comfortable and letting them open up."
Soriano's interest in journalism and storytelling was recently featured in the Leyden District 212 video series, "One Amazing Story", which he helped produce. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFXQ2zZZ8Dw
