A recent Morton High School graduate has made sports history as the first athlete from Illinois to sign and play women’s collegiate flag football, according to Morton High School District 201.
Emma Valenzuela played corner defense on the Morton flag football team and will continue the sport as a student athlete at Bryant & Stratton College in Wisconsin.
According to District 201, Emma decided to play flag football during her senior year at Morton as the school promoted the sport. Emma said when she asked her family for permission to try out for flag football, they were concerned at first because they did not want her to get hurt.
But she said at the end her family was fully supportive.
Emma said her love for sports came from watching and playing with her brothers while growing up.
The Bryant & Stratton College website says its flag football team was one of the first of 26 female flag football teams to form in the country. The college received a $10,000 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) grant in partnership with the National Football League (NFL) this past fall.
