This course is designed to educate learning leaders on effective strategies to supervise improved student achievement through the use of formative assessment in the context of a professional learning community. The work of W. James Popham will be studied to learn the concept of formative assessment. Participants will then learn how to establish a district-wide Common Formative Assessment Planning framework based on the system developed by Doug Reeves at the Leadership and Learning Center in Denver, Colorado. This system utilizes state standards to develop "power standards." Then, through a backward design approach, standards are unwrapped, and formative assessment is incorporated into ongoing instructional activities. Through this system, teachers can effectively monitor the extent to which students are prepared for summative common assessments and landmark state assessments, and adjust instruction appropriately.
An additional $30 fee is assessed to this course for the book Common Formative Assessments: How to Connect Standards-Based Instruction and Assessment by Larry Ainsworth and Donald Veigut.
Registration will be held from 8:00 - 8:25 a.m.; class begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. Credit cannot be issued for late arrivals or early departures. Administrators' Academy Approval No. 842 or CPD credit available. |
